Technology Change and Infrastructure

As part of our work on a New Zealand infrastructure strategy, we commissioned a report on the potential impact of technology change on infrastructure.

About the report

Preparing for Technological Change in the Infrastructure Sector was developed by Beca Ltd and Polis Consulting Group. As part of the development, they held a workshop with technology experts from a range of infrastructure organisations from both the private and public sector.

This report identifies a range of emerging technologies that can have an impact on infrastructure. These include Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things and digital twins.

It also makes a number of recommendations, including the creation of digital twins of infrastructure projects, piloting digital consenting, shifting to a more fully open data environment, designing use cases for AI in infrastructure, and the creation of Decarbonisation of Infrastructure fund.

We have considered the report’s findings and recommendations in developing our consultation document for the New Zealand infrastructure strategy.
